Copyright, Permissions, and Citations
When quoting, reproducing, exhibiting, or referring to materials that the Sigmund Freud Archives has placed in the Sigmund Freud collections in the Library of Congress, users of the collections should cite the Sigmund Freud Archives and the materials' location in the Library of Congress. Users should consult the Library of Congress finding aids, and the staff of the Library's relevant divisions and research centers, for complete guidance on the specific formats for citing the Library's collections of Freud papers, films, photographs, and audio recordings.
The Sigmund Freud Archives does not own rights in its collections, but permission and possible fees to reproduce or exhibit materials may be required if previous owners or publishers of documents and artifacts in the collections still retain copyright. It is the responsibility of users to identify the possible possessors of such rights.
Whenever possible, the Library of Congress provides factual information about copyright owners and related matters in the catalog records, finding aids, and other texts that accompany collections. As a publicly supported institution, the Library generally does not own rights in its collections. It therefore does not charge permission fees for use of such material and generally does not grant or deny permission to publish or otherwise distribute material in its collections. Permission and possible fees may be required from the copyright owner independently of the Library.
It is the researcher's obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the Library's collections. Transmission or reproduction of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use requires the written permission of the copyright owners. Researchers must make their own assessments of rights in light of their intended use.
